Using the Stash Block in Moodle

Stash allows instructors to create items like badges or awards and place them in activities and resources for students to find and pick up. Stash promotes interaction with activities and is a great tool for instructors looking to gamify a course.

Adding the Stash Block

To add the Stash block to a course, open the course, turn editing on, locate the “Add a block” block and select Stash from the dropdown.

In the next window, add an Item name, upload an image from your computer, add any details to the item, and click on Save and next to add another item or Save changes if you’re done.

You’ll be prompted to add a location for the items you add. Students will not see the location; it’s more of a reminder for you so you know where this item will be placed in the course.

Once all of your items have been added, you’ll see them appear in your List of items. To edit, add locations or delete an item, use the icons in the “Actions” column.

Adding Items to Activities/Resources

When you’re ready to add the items to Moodle activities or resources, click on the item’s location to copy a snippet that you can paste in the description of an activity.

Next, return to your Moodle course page and edit the settings of an activity or resource where you’d like the item to appear. Paste the snippet in the description area of the activity.

Viewing Stash Reports

After you’ve placed all of your items in activities or resources, students can begin to “pick up” the items as they work through your material. To see your students’ progress, click on Report in the Stash block.

You’ll see a report displaying how many items students have picked up in the course, indicated in the Stash column. There’s also an option under the Actions column to reset Stash items for each student.

Restricting Access through a Stash Item

You can also restrict access to an activity or resource depending on whether or not a student has picked up a Stash item you’ve placed in the course. To add the restriction, edit the settings of the activity that should be restricted, scroll down to the “Restrict access” area and click on the Add restriction button.

null

In the next window, click on the Stash object button.

null

In settings of the restriction, select the item that students need to have picked up in order to view the activity.

null

The activity or resource will be grayed out unless students have picked up the item you designated.
