Creating a Moodle Course Backup

Step 1: To create a backup of a course, open the course in Moodle, click the More dropdown link on the course dashboard and select Course reuse:

Step 2: Select Backup from the dropdown button that appears at the top left of the Course reuse page:

Step 3: In the Backup Settings area, we recommend using the default settings to save the course content. Please keep in mind that the default settings do not save user data like forum posts, submitted assignments or grades. Scroll to the bottom of the Backup Settings area and click on Jump to Final Step to backup all course content or click on Next to select specific topics, activities and resources to backup:

Step 4: As your backup is created, you’ll see a progress bar that shows you the percentage of the process that is complete and how many seconds left to the process.

Step 5: You will receive a confirmation message that says, “The backup process has completed.” When you see this message, click on Continue:

Step 6: You’ll be directed to the Restore window. Locate the Course backup area section and click the Download link located to the right of the backup file you just created to download it.

You can now save and store the backup file on your computer or preferred remote storage system (we recommend Google Drive). Please note that your Moodle backup course cannot be opened or accessed outside of Moodle. To access your backed up course, you’ll need to restore it into an existing Moodle shell. If you need a shell created for a backed up course, please contact Ed Tech.
