Using Moodle Topic Areas
Changing the Section Name
You can use the default for the Section Name (Topic 1, Topic 2, etc.), or turn the default off so that you can customize how your sections, or topic areas, are titled. There are two ways to change section names.
Quick Method: Navigate to your Moodle course and toggle Edit mode to ON and click the Pencil icon to the right of a section title. A text box will appear where the section text appeared. Type in your desired text and hit Enter on your keyboard. Your desired text will be displayed:
More Options Method: Navigate to your Moodle course and toggle Edit mode to ON and click the Edit drop down menu located to the left of the section name/title of the topic area you are working with and select Edit section:
Step 2: For Section name check Custom and then type the topic area name you want in the text box provided. If you have a short instruction, message, or section image to add, you can type it or place that in this text box provided next to Summary. The information will show up just below the section name on your course page:
Step 3: When you are finished, click the Save changes button at the bottom of the page.
Hiding/Showing a Topic Section
Hiding sections is an excellent way to limit your students’ access to parts of your course that you are not ready to display. It can be especially handy at the start of semester.
Step 1: From within your course, toggle Edit mode to ON.
Step 2: Click the Edit drop down menu and then select Hide topic:
Step 3: To unhide the topic area, click the Edit drop down menu and select Show topic. Note: when a topic area is hidden, every item in the section is given a Hidden from students label:
Highlighting a Topic Section
You can highlight topic areas to indicate which topic is the current one. A highlighted section is marked by a dark green line that appears to the left of the highlighted section(s) and the topic titled is labeled Highlighted.
Step 1: From within your course toggle Edit mode to ON.
Step 2: For the topic area you would like highlighted as the current topic, click the Edit drop down menu and select Highlight. To un-highlight, select Remove highlight from the Edit drop down menu, which will appear in the location that Highlight previously appeared:
