Have you ever felt like why do I need to know all of that? This very thing happened to me this weekend while I was working on an assignment for my class at Ferris State University. It made me think about all of the classes I have had in the past. I thought about those tough subjects that I really did not want to take but were required. When the instructor made the work relevant to real world, or made me understand the value of the assignment I did so much better.
Thinking about this more and more it made me realize that every subject or course I take is important and there is a reason it is required. I have to have someone change my mindset. I am such a hands-on learner that for some subjects it is hard for me to comprehend if I cannot dive in and get dirty. Therefore, for those subjects I need to have a little help.
Take for instance a class I took here at NMC. ART 111 with Andrea Gerring. I took this course to fulfil a requirement with a History credit. I am not one who is much into Art but felt to fulfill a requirement I would give it a shot. Andrea changed my mindset. She allowed me to see the beauty and importance of the history of art in the world. This ended up being by far my favorite class of all time. I now see things differently. I actually can look at something in a way I never would have in the past. Now before taking this class if you would have told me I would love to watch documentaries on, Byzantine Art I would have laughed at you. This course changed my mindset and let me see things from new lenses. The assignments of this class gave me value to why something was important to learn.
Think about why you assign certain assignments and make it meaningful; this allows the students to see the importance and value of learning.
