How about centering education on a wicked problem rather than centering on a department or traditional major? Radical idea?

We have discussed for quite some time now about tearing down the silos in education. Why is this such a hard thing to do? Perhaps it is because we have inherent silos with Departments and Majors. Let’s think about education differently.

Perhaps we can have students enter into cohorts and follow their own passions in regards to a wicked problem. A wicked problem is one that has no easy solution, or perhaps no solution at all.

Imagine students coming to NMC and selecting a problem, rather than a Major. Learning can be centered on the student’s passion. Learning becomes incredibly relevant and personal. The possibilities are endless. Faculty advise students on what information, courses, community resources they may need to help them solve their problem.
