Sherry Fest Module 3

Welcome back to the Sherry Fest Accessibility Challenge! Even though our Detroit Tigers are done for the season, the spirit of the game—and the challenge—is still strong. We’re well into the “pennant race” of accessibility, and every completed module is a win for our students!

Great job to those of you who completed the Module 2 Knowledge Check by the deadline! If you’re a few modules behind, don’t hang your head! The accessibility challenge is a marathon, not a sprint. You can still catch up and complete all modules before the end of the semester to get that Hawk Owl Café gift card and entry into the NMC hoodie drawing. There’s still time to sign up and get in the game if you haven’t yet!

Stepping Up To The Plate: Module 3

When you’re creating course materials, every document is a potential hit or a strikeout for a student using assistive technology. This week, we’re focusing on making your documents easy to see, easy to read, and universally accessible. It’s time to ensure your text isn’t a tricky curveball but a straight, clear pitch over the plate!

Module 3: Creating Readable Text will cover critical elements of visual and technical accessibility, including:

  • Typography: Choosing fonts, sizes, and spacing that enhance readability for all users.
  • Using Colors: Understanding color contrast requirements and how to use color effectively without relying on it as the sole means of conveying information.
  • Creating Accessible PDF Files: Learning best practices to ensure those common PDF handouts are readable by assistive technology.

Your Objective

Your goal is to complete the entire Module 3 and successfully pass the Creating Readable Text Knowledge Check quiz. We encourage you to start applying these best practices to your current assignments and documents—practice makes perfect!

To stay on track with the challenge, please complete Module 3 by Sunday, November 9th.

Use the “Questions” discussion at the top of the course if you run into any knuckleballs. Let’s make every document a home run!
