Your Academic & Career Advising Center team has been hard at work developing and revising a Faculty Advising Training Course in Canvas. Thank you to those of you who helped review and give feedback to help us improve it and meet your learning needs!
We’re excited to launch this course for you in early January. If, however, you’d like early access to work on modules within the course during the winter break, please let us know! Here’s what to know and expect about the Canvas course and training for Spring semester:
- We have created 16 modules covering topics including things like orientation advising, using the various advising tools and resources, financial aid basics, math and English placement and course sequencing, career decision making, transfer advising, and more
- The course includes short quizzes, activities, videos, and links to resources to help with your learning
- Based on our faculty reviewer feedback, we estimate the course will take approximately 4-6 hours to complete
- The goal is to have all modules completed prior to the end of Spring semester, with specific modules to be completed ahead of attending practicum workshops (read on for more on that!)
We’re employing a version of a flipped classroom approach, where online course content is intended to be reviewed and completed ahead of “in-class” workshops. Advisors have developed a series of four workshops to assist you in applying your learning, providing a space for asking questions, and to help you feel comfortable and confident in advising students! Each workshop covers 3-5 modules. We’re still hammering out timelines with the faculty advising development team, but expect to offer workshops in Spring/early summer.
Please reach out to us with any advising questions or concerns along the way. Sending an email to advising@nmc.edu gets an email to all of our advisors. If you have specific questions about the faculty contract, please reach out to your building representatives or faculty association folks.
Have a restful break, and we’ll see you in the New Year!
