Sometimes stress and frustration can take over and it does not allow us to focus on what we are doing. That is why it is always important to have a little fun at work or school. A little laughter and a smile can change someone’s day.
I remember classes that I have taken in the past where it was a lecture for the complete two hours. I would leave there thinking what did I just learn and why do I need to know this.
It wasn’t until I took a few classes here at NMC that I could see things differently. One of the first classes that I had that made class fun was Deb Pharo’s Math111 class. She would have hands on real world activities in every class. This helped us as students see the importance in this subject. It also allowed us to see that we use algebra everyday and may not have ever realized it.
There have been many other classes that I have taken here since Deb’s that have also helped me see things from new lenses and given me a different perspective on the tough subjects.
I now have the pleasure to work in a FUN department here at NMC. We try to keep the stress and frustrations away by incorporating a little fun and laughter in our workweek.
I cannot speak for everyone in my department but allowing a little stress relief by incorporating laughter into our work week has made all the difference. We do this in our department by having potluck lunches, team golf challenges, and even a few college sport rivalry activities. This has made going to work enjoyable. Remember that your students may have things going on in their lives as well, so bring a little fun into your lessons it can make all the difference.
