We have experienced an increase in help desk tickets recently from users getting error messages when posting to forums or taking quizzes. We would like to share the following tips when using Moodle.
Recommended Internet Browsers: Please remember that Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome are the recommended browsers when using Moodle. There are issues when using Internet Explorer, and Moodle recommends that you do not use IE. In addition, make sure you are using the latest version of Firefox or Chrome. Use these links to make sure you are using the most current version of Firefox or Google Chrome.
Attention Mac Users: The recommended browser is Firefox. Google Chrome does work but you may find issues when using the text editor and images.
Clearing your Browser Cache: A cache is a record kept in a browser that stores the cookies you might require to login somewhere, and your browsing history for easy access to visited sites. Clearing the browser’s cache is one of the most basic tools at our disposal for trouble-shooting. A quick way to access the clear browsing history feature is to use: CNTRL+SHIFT+DELETE- a window will pop up making it possible to clear history, this works with all browsers.
One Instance of Moodle at a Time: When you are using Moodle, you should always make sure to have only one instance of Moodle opened in the browser at a time. This is especially important when taking a quiz or even posting to forums. If you absolutely need more than one window of Moodle open at a time, you need to have two different browsers open. If you are in the same browser with more than one instance of Moodle, you are taking a chance of losing information and receiving fatal errors.
Forum Discussions: When writing a long forum discussion post, it is a good practice to compose it in Word and then copy and paste it in Moodle. By doing this, you reduce the chance of losing your information due to your session timing out, or any other unplanned computer glitches that may happen. This is information we share each semester because it is crucial to your students. There is nothing more frustrating than doing all of the work; only to submit and find out you lost your information.
We will be sending a message out to all students with this reminder. Remember if you have an issue contact the NMC Technology Help Desk at 5-3020 or submit a help desk ticket.
