You’ve probably heard us talking a lot about Headings and creating structure in your documents and how important that is. Not only are headings great design practice, they can help in removing potential navigational barriers for students. It’s a great step in preparing your materials to accommodate all the different devices and apps being used for access.

So as you become acquainted with using headings take some time and meet Styles. Styles is here to help you create properly formatted headings. Remember, just because you make text bigger, bold, or in color, doesn’t mean it’s a heading! You need to apply a style.

Once you apply a preset heading style you can then change the look of the text by right-clicking on the heading level in the Styles menu and choosing Modify. You will be able to change the font, size, color, spacing, etc. and whether the change applies only to your current document or all future documents based off the same template.

Some other features in Styles include the ability to clear formatting and create your own styles. Dig in, get creative, and have some fun getting to know your tools.

Bonus tip: Once you have your heading structure in place it’s super easy to create a table of contents for your document. Go to the References tab, click Table of Contents and select a format. The table of contents will be generated based off of your headings.
