Uploading an Assignment in Moodle

There are different ways your instructor can use a Moodle assignment to collect your work:

  • Asking you to type your response into an online text box
  • Requiring you to submit a file online
  • A combination of both an online text box answer and submitting a file

    Submitting a File

From the Moodle course homepage, click on the assignment to open it.

Carefully read the instructions from your instructor. Click the “Add submission” button.

Add your file by dragging and dropping the file into the dotted-lined box area provided, or by clicking the “Add” icon located in the upper left of the file submission area, browse for your file and upload it.

You’ll be directed to the “File picker” area. Click “Choose File,” then navigate your computer for the necessary file. Once selected, the file you’re about to upload will appear to the right of the “Attachment” chooser button. Click on “Upload this file” button to proceed.

Click on “Save changes” in the next area to submit your file.

You’ll be returned to an area where you can view your “Submission status”. Here you can see the file you have submitted, the Grading status”Grading criteria” if provided, and a space to add Submission comments” to your instructor. The green “Edit my Submission” button enables you to either add more files (if allowed) or delete files – in case you uploaded the wrong one.

Make sure your Submission status reads “Submitted for grading”, if it doesn’t, look for the “Submit assignment” button at the far bottom of the page. The “Submit assignment” button is an extra step instructors may or may not use for an assignment. If set, it allows you to keep a draft version of your submission on the system. Once you click submit and confirm you are submitting, your submission will be regarded as final and you will no longer be able to edit it.

    Online Text Box

From the Moodle course homepage, click on the Assignment to open it.

Carefully read the instructions from your instructor before clicking on the Add submission” button.

Type your response in the text box and click on the blue “Save changes” button.

You’ll be returned to an area where you can view your “Submission status”. Here you can see your typed response, the Grading status”Grading criteria” if provided, and a space to add Submission comments” to your instructor. The blue “Edit my Submission” button enables you to edit your response until it is graded.

Note: Double check your Submission status to make sure it reads “submitted for grading”, if it doesn’t, look for the “Submit assignment” button at the far bottom of the page.
