As I sat down to write this welcome back message something hit me. This year, 2022, is my 25th year working in higher education. 25 years. When I was 25 years old and got hired by Michigan State University 2022 seemed ages away. Of course, the younger me thought I’d spend all 25 years at MSU, retire early, and move on to another career. But then opportunity after opportunity popped up at MSU, so I moved from supporting video production of lectures to instructional design to faculty development. Then, in year 18, I got an offer to come to NMC. I was a little older and wiser and I realized it was a move I had to make. I haven’t regretted it for a second and continue to love my career in higher education.
With all the negative news surrounding higher education and its value, family and friends often ask me why I stay when I could be paid more or get less grief in the private sector. My answer: I love the people, I love the students, and I love the feeling of hope, renewal, enthusiasm, and excitement that oozes from campus with every new academic year. The academic calendar has defined my life for 25 years and I can’t wrap my head around it NOT being determined by semesters, spring break, and the July summer lull. I have and will continue to defend the work we all do in higher education to help students find a better way or figure out their path to a brighter future. We may not always be successful but I’d put money on the idea that most of us will try and try again. As I wrote on the postcards that I filled out that were sent to students, “Help will always be given at NMC to those who ask for it.”
