We’ve added two new resource pages to the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) website to help you with Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and General Education Outcomes (GEOs).

The SLOs page includes an overview of L. Dee Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning, which is the model we use at NMC to design our course SLOs. The page breaks down each of the six interconnected categories—Foundational Knowledge, Application, Integration, Human Dimension, Caring, and Learning How to Learn—providing definitions, action verbs, and example SLOs for each one. This resource is designed to help you create comprehensive and impactful learning experiences for your students.

The GEOs page provides a step-by-step guide on how to assess the NMC’s four General Education Outcomes: Communication (COM), Critical Thinking (CT), Quantitative Reasoning (QR), and Social Responsibility (SR). The page covers everything from discovering which GEO your course supports to adding and assessing GEOs in Canvas assignments and quizzes. It also explains how to analyze your results using the Canvas Learning Mastery Gradebook and NMC’s Gen Ed Power BI Report. The page features an 8-step video tutorial to guide you through the process.

You can find the new pages under the “Teaching Practices” section of the CTL website. Take a look and let us know what you think!
