Well, Northwestern Michigan College’s first semester as a Canvas school is nearly in the books. After countless hours of updating links, checking quiz imports, and figuring out “how the heck do I adjust the gradebook?”, the Ed Tech team hopes you’re feeling more confident in our new learning management system and maybe even looking forward to an easier semester-to-semester transition this spring.

The good news is that Canvas course imports are simple to complete (whether you do them yourself or send us a help desk ticket), and we’re confident that most of our Canvas users will be able to hit the ground running in the upcoming semester.

And if not, no worries. Your friendly neighborhood Ed Tech team is always here and ready to help.

CANVAS CALENDAR DATES:

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13 — Fall 2025 (2601) classes end.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17 (11 am) — Fall 2025 (2601) grades are due.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17 (1 pm) — Are you interested in online test proctoring? If so, join us for a Respondus instructor demo. You’ll learn how to enable Respondus in your courses and add proctoring security to your Canvas quizzes.

MONDAY, JANUARY 5 — Students are populated into Spring 2026 (2602) 16-week courses. On this date, instructor’s will be able to see students listed in their Canvas People page. Students will not yet have access to these classes, however. If you’re teaching an accelerated course, look for students to be populated in the participant’s list five days before that course’s listed start date.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 6 — Fall 2025 (2601) courses turned off. We turn courses off 20 days after final grades are due. If you need a course left open for a student with an incomplete, please submit a ticket and let us know the course that needs to remain open and the student(s) who require access.

NOTE: Students gain access to their courses two days before the official start date.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 8 (12:01 am) — Spring 2026 (2602) courses made visible for students whose courses begin on January 10. If you are still preparing your course(s), please place a note to students at the top of your course and hide modules you want to remain unavailable.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 8 (9 am – 4 pm) — Canvas Day Camp. Ed Tech will be available in multiple formats to help with anything Canvas related — from gradebook setup, the creation of cross-listed shells, course transfers, or help on developing content and instructional design. We will be in the Innovation Center room 123 all day or you can join us via Zoom (click to add this event to your calendar). There will be snacks!

SATURDAY, JANUARY 10 — Spring 2026 (2602) semester begins. Let’s go Hawk Owls!

Finally, if you’ve been assigned to teach a course in the spring of 2026, but the course doesn’t appear in your Canvas All Courses page, check with your department manager to make sure you’ve been assigned to the course in the registration software. If you have any questions please contact Ben Post (bpost@nmc.edu). If you need support, please submit a help desk ticket.
