Canvas Corner Volume 15 (Season 2): Canvas Clean-Up Part 1: Pages

As NMC nears the conclusion of its first year as a Canvas institution, it’s time for us to think long-term about digital course management. Most instructors’ Canvas courses began as Moodle imports and while that jumpstart was beneficial in many ways (hello, quiz banks!), it also left some unwanted Moodle remnants lingering in unusual corners of instructors’ Canvas classes.

Over the next several weeks, Canvas Corners will focus on where to find those remnants and how to clean them up. This week’s episode highlights Canvas Pages.

Nearly all text (and many images) created in Moodle that are not tied to a quiz, discussion, or assignment migrate to Canvas as Pages. Initially, these pages appear in two places: the Modules page and the Pages page. As instructors clean up their Moodle imports for use in Canvas, they often only remove the unnecessary “Moodle junk” from Modules. However, removing items from Modules does not delete them from the course. Instead, they remain, published or unpublished, on the Pages screen. If students have access to the Pages link in Course Navigation, they may still be able to view that leftover content.

Luckily, cleaning up this page is easy. If you don’t want to delete any of that old content, it can be as simple as disabling it from the Course Navigation settings or unpublishing Pages that are unnecessary. If you recognize those Moodle-imported pages as being truly unnecessary in the Canvas environment, Ed Tech recommends you simply delete them, which can be done easily and in bulk, directly from the Pages screen.

ABOUT CANVAS CORNERS

Canvas Corners will come out each week during the fall and spring NMC academic calendar. Each will begin with a short video where Ben will walk viewers through a straightforward, yet essential, Canvas feature or function. Below the video will be a description of that same feature or function, and then each post will conclude with pertinent knowledgebase links, relevant Training Services Portal courses, and other relevant links to assist you on your Canvas journey. If you have any suggestions for improvements to the Canvas Corner, please email me at bpost@nmc.edu.
