Canvas Corner Volume 7 (Season 3): Getting Ready for Canvas New Quizzes (Part I)

For those of you still using Canvas Classic Quizzes, it’s time to start thinking about eventually moving to New Quizzes, as Canvas has finally stated that the sunsetting of Classic Quizzes is coming sometime in the next year or two (Canvas maintains they will provide plenty of warning).

The first step in preparing for New Quizzes is getting familiar with the migration process. The good news is that moving from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes is straightforward and pretty easy. In fact, there are a couple of ways to do it, depending on whether you want to migrate a single quiz or convert all your quizzes when copying a course.

If you want to migrate just one quiz, head to your course’s Quizzes page and click the three-dot menu next to the Classic Quiz you want to convert. Select Migrate, and Canvas will create a New Quiz with the same questions. You’ll find the new version directly below the original. Just keep in mind that some settings and features work differently in New Quizzes, so you’ll want to review the quiz before using it with students. You can also convert all your Classic Quizzes when importing a course into a new course shell. Under the import options, select Convert content to New Quizzes. Canvas will migrate your quizzes and move your question banks into item banks, which New Quizzes uses.

One word of caution: before converting an entire course, consider testing the process in a sandbox course. Once you’ve made the move, going back to Classic Quizzes isn’t as simple as migrating to New Quizzes, and you’ll probably want to get comfortable with the new settings and options first. The good news is that New Quizzes has come a long way, and Canvas has addressed pretty much hall of the limitations that previously held instructors back. NMC’s EdTech team is happy to help you explore New Quizzes and plan your migration when you’re ready.
