A number of FLCs got organized January 4th at the Mid-Year Conference, and they are taking off. A Faculty Learning Community is a group of faculty, staff, and/or other interested individuals who get together to investigate a question or pursue a topic of interest. They provide an opportunity for professional learning as well as a sense of community. Many colleges and universities have created a vibrant culture of inquiry through their FLCs, and CIE hopes the same can begin to develop here at NMC.
If you have not joined an FLC, but would like to, you may still be able to jump aboard. Go to the Teaching@NMC site and click on the Faculty Learning Communities logo in the upper right hand corner. There you can see the FLCs that have begun as well as take a look at the proposal forms that give an overview of each group’s goals.
If you don’t have time this semester or don’t see a group that interests you right now, stay tuned. The next FLC cycle will start in the summer and then another in the fall. Start thinking now about what you might like to investigate with others–maybe a lesson study, maybe a new technology, maybe active learning techniques. Anything you want to learn more about would make a great FLC topic. You can email Kristen Salathiel, Mark DeLonge or Kay Harris at any time for more information.
