Did you know that accessibility simply means removing barriers for all learners accessing online content? Because of the rise in the number of students accessing and completing coursework from their cell phones, tablets, and other tech, we need to be more aware of how we create that content. Here are a few tips:
- Chunk your content into smaller sections. It is easier to navigate smaller sections of content rather than one long page of endless scrolling.
- Limit tables. Don’t use tables to format content. They are not easily viewed on the smaller screens of cell phones.
- Avoid large files. Students will have data speeds that vary or have to pay a fee for data. This will affect their ability to access materials. Consider removing images or non-essential media from PDF or PowerPoint files.
Finally, check out what your course looks like on your cell phone to see what your students are experiencing. It might change the way you design your course.
