Bronwyn Jones wrote this about lesson study for the October PD Day, “Originating in the US in the 1980’s, then migrating to Japan where it flourished, lesson study focuses on how instructors can impact and change student thinking as a means of catalyzing deeper learning. Premised on the notion that the best ideas for improving teaching and learning come from teachers, lesson study is an invigorating approach to helping students achieve outcomes proficiency in any discipline.”
Recommended by Bronwyn, this book, Lesson Study Step by Step by Jacqueline Hurd and Catherine Lewis, gives a full overview of lesson study–guidelines for how to put together a lesson study group and choose a focus for research, suggestions for establishing team norms, templates for classroom observations, and protocols for lesson discussion. The book even includes a video demonstrating all the steps. Bronwyn found this book particularly helpful as she put together the October PD Day session on lesson study. Building on that session, we hope to get lesson study groups going here at NMC (watch for an upcoming Friday Forum!), and this book is just what you need to see what it’s all about. Check it out of the CIE Resources Library located just inside the Educational Media Technologies area.
