Canvas Corner Season 2, Volume 1: Changing Assignment Due Dates (3 Easy Ways!)

Changing assignment due dates can be one of the most tedious and time-consuming (not to mention boring) parts of preparing your online course materials for a new semester. Thankfully, Canvas makes changing dates a snap! Watch this tutorial to explore all three easy (maybe even fun?) options.

Here are those three snappy, quick options:

Upon Course Import: If you’re importing a past course section into a new semester shell, you have the option to shift due dates during the import process. Canvas will interpret the past shell’s due dates and line them up with the new semester’s start dates. While not perfect, it often gets you very close. You can also substitute days of the week during import—so if the previous semester’s sections met on Mondays and Wednesdays, but your new section meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, you can automatically shift due dates to match.

From One Spot on the Assignments Page: If you click Assignments in course navigation and then the options menu at the top right of the page, you’ll see an option to Edit Assignment Dates. On the next screen, you’ll find a list of everything in your course with its due dates. Simply click the calendar icon next to each date and change it as needed. You don’t even have to click Save!

From Your Calendar: This is the easiest—and most fun—option! If you navigate to your calendar and check the box next to your course, all of that course’s due dates will appear. To change a due date, just click the activity and drag it to the new date. That’s it! The new due date will be updated everywhere in Canvas.

Of course, if you don’t want to use any of these quick and snappy solutions, you can always open each individual assignment and change the due dates in the settings. But…ugh, why? Take care of it in a few clicks and then hit the beach (fall) or slopes (winter).
