Canvas Corner Season 2, Volume 3: Organizing Your Course Navigation Sidebar
One of the powerful things about Canvas is that there are many ways for instructors and students to create and navigate course content. For example, assignments can be created from the Assignments list page or directly within a module. Students, likewise, can access those assignments from both places.
But what if the instructor disables the Assignments page from student view? Aha — now students must go through the modules, which contain all of the relevant course content organized by the instructor, to get to each assignment. Sure, this means there are fewer options for students to navigate and complete coursework, but it also means that the instructor is designing the flow of the course to organize and clarify the learning process and student workflow.
So, how do you control course navigation for your students? By organizing the course navigation menu! Instructors can do this by clicking “Settings” and then selecting the “Navigation” tab at the top of the next page. From there, simply drag and drop the available link options into the desired order, including moving undesired course links into the “Disabled from Students” section at the bottom. Click “Save,” and you’re done — students are now limited to navigating the course in the way the instructor intends.
