Ding dong, the Moodle is dead. And stepping into its ruby slippers: Canvas.
It’s hard to believe a year has passed since we first introduced Canvas to a small group of pilot instructors. Since last fall, Canvas use has grown quickly, with at least 350 NMC courses now managed through our new learning platform. The feedback from both instructors and students has been overwhelmingly positive.
That said, we know challenges will continue as we complete the transition to Canvas this fall. While Ed Tech has a wide range of resources and trainings available (Canvas Day Camp coming soon!), it’s important for remaining holdouts to get familiar with Canvas as soon as possible. Doing so will help ensure they’re comfortable with the platform by the start of the fall semester. It’s never too soon to get started if you haven’t already!
And with that, please make note of the following dates as we progress into and through August:
- AUGUST 13 (1–4 pm) , 14, and 21 (9 am–4 pm) — Canvas Day Camps (VIRTUAL & IN-PERSON): On each of these three dates, Ed Tech staff will be available in multiple formats to assist instructors as they get their Canvas shells ready for students. Each day will begin with a “Intro to Canvas” presentation (not required), followed by an “office hours” format—meaning you can drop in whenever it’s convenient. We will start every session in Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center rooms 104/105, but we will also have the nearby computer lab available and you can join us via Zoom (Click for the Zoom link). There will be snacks!
- MONDAY, AUGUST 18 — Students populated in standard-start Fall 2025 (2601) courses: If your course starts on the 23rd, you’ll be able to see students in Canvas on this day. If you’re teaching a late-start course, look for students to be populated on the People page 5 days before that course’s listed start date. Students in standard-start courses won’t be able to see their courses until Thursday, however (see below)
- THURSDAY, AUGUST 21 — Fall 2025 (2601) courses turned on for students: The semester begins August 23rd. All courses become visible to students two days before their listed start date so students are able to confirm their course enrollments. Make sure your course shells have at least a welcome message by this date. If some of your content is not ready, you can unpublish those sections (Modules) to keep them from student view
- SATURDAY, AUGUST 23 — Fall 2025 (2601) semester begins: Let’s go, Hawk Owls!
- THURSDAY, AUGUST 28 — Summer 2025 (2503) courses turned off: All courses are visible to students until 20 days after a semester ends. If you need a course left open beyond that window, please submit a ticket and let us know the course and the student(s) who need continued access
- FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 — Moodle is removed from NMC: At this date, Moodle will no longer be available for instructors or students, so if you need anything in Moodle or have any Incompletes, they should be addressed and completed by this date. After September 19, Ed Tech will maintain a small Moodle server and keep 5 years of past Moodle courses stored remotely, so it will be possible to review and/or retrieve past course materials, but only via a Help Desk ticket.
If you’ve been assigned to teach a course in the Fall of 2025, but the course doesn’t appear on your Canvas Courses page, check with your department manager to confirm you’ve been officially assigned in Banner.
If you have any questions about these upcoming dates, please submit a Help Desk Ticket (for Canvas course transfers and cross-listings, choose “Report an Issue” and then select “Teaching & Learning Apps” from the drop-down.
