For a long time you’ve been able to access Q and S drives and other drives remotely through an application called NetStorage. NetStorage is available by going to your MyNMC page and clicking on “Q & S Drives” in the “Other Services” drop down area. In the near future, NMC will switch to a new application called Workspace for accessing college drives and files while off campus.
How do I access Workspace?
You can access Workspace by clicking on “Network File Manager” on your MyNMC homepage. Workspace functions a lot like NetStorage, but it features an updated, much more contemporary interface. Also, it works on all types of devices including smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs.
What are the features of Workspace?
The Location Panel will appear in left margin and allows you to navigate through your different drives. Once inside a drive, you’ll see your top level folders and you can use the pagination tool at the bottom to view more. Workspace also a has a right click menu feature. Simply right click in any area or on an individual folder or document to see options.
If you’re in a subfolder of a drive and would like to take a step back, click on the “Up one level” button at the top of the interface. Inside individual folders you have the ability to change the view of your files and you can also sort by different variables. By clicking on “More Options” you can upload a file, create a new file or folder or look at recent files. You can also drag and drop files into Workspace. There’s also a search function that allows you to search for files, but please know that you can only search by file name, not by file content.
Important things to remember
- File editing still occurs locally. That means that you’ll have to download the documents to your local device for modification and then upload the file through WorkSpace to override the original or save as a newer version.
- Workspace doesn’t have collaboration or sharing qualities like Google Docs. Only one person can edit a document at a single time.
- Windows file explorer is probably still a bit easier to use if you’re on campus.
Can I still access NetStorage?
WorkSpace and NetStorage are both currently available for all students and employees, but NetStorage won’t be an option for much longer. Currently, the plan is to remove NetStorage by December or January.
We hope you found this information helpful. Click on the question mark in the lower right hand corner of Workspace for some tips, or if need more help, submit a ticket through your MyNMC homepage or call 995-3020.
Will Workspace allow us to utilize AFP for file access? It would be great to have an upgraded security version of AFP.
Joel,
I’ve forwarded your question to Bryce Turner. He’s managing Workspace and should be able to give you more information. I’ll let you know what he says.
Thank goodness the S drive is coming into the 21st century! I’m wondering, though, will all the content get switched over as is to Workspace? Do we need to do anything to be sure that that will happen? I’m thinking of the five million CIE files in the S drive.
Thanks!
Hi Kristen – the content stays the same. Workspace is essentially just an interface to view the content. You don’t have to do anything 🙂
