“This is your last warning.” That is a line I heard a lot last night while watching The Walking Dead. Of course, it never really was the last warning, because they kept repeating it for every situation. As the semester goes into its 11th week, I was thinking about all the “last warnings” I had given to the sub-performing students. I am not sure how many of these last warnings I had given. There was the initial discussion of the syllabus. Then we had the review of the first major exam. Then there were the Grade Alerts. Now with the Thanksgiving break coming up in three weeks, there is the last warning to get busy on the final projects. It seems that there are plenty of last warnings being handed out. Are the students regarding these last warnings as indications that time is running out on the semester, or are they expecting more last warnings before the work load needs to be addressed? Is this like the Final Notice I get from AARP that my exclusive offer for membership expires soon. Given that I have received a dozen of these in the last six months, I don’t think that there will ever be a final notice, last warning, or expiration of their exclusive offer. I do not feel like I have to act as fast as they say. Maybe that is the culture that prevents some of the students from acting on the class assignments until I hand out the exclusive final absolute last warning in a couple of weeks, followed by another one after the Thanksgiving break..
