nullWelcome to spring semester 2017. I thought it would be a good time to share a Fact-Sheet on Disability Etiquette We spend a lot of time trying to make our materials and facilities accessible to our stakeholder with disabilities. Let’s not forget to engage with the people around us. This information might help as you interact with students, community members and each other.

If I had to pick something off of the fact sheet to mention here it would be to use “person first” language when speaking with or about someone with a disability. For example:

Instead of: Say:
She is learning disabled. She has a learning disability.
He is wheelchair bound. He uses a wheelchair.
She is dyslexic. She has dyslexia.

I also wanted to bring this event to your attention. The Dancing Wheels Company will be performing to a sold out crowd at Milliken Auditorium on Friday, February 10th at 10 AM.

nullFor over 3 decades, The Dancing Wheels Company has captivated audiences with programs ranging from classical to cutting-edge. Perfect for K-12, this program presents dance and disability-related issues in a fun and informative way. Following several energetic and engaging dance excerpts, a dancer with a disability tells of their personal quest to live a full life regardless of obstacles. The Dancing Wheels Company shares the vision that dreams can become a reality.

As mentioned above, this presentation is currently sold out. Please contact Jason Dake (jdake@nmc.edu) for waiting list information.
