The semester is winding down and the panic is setting in.  There seems to be the immediate need to catch-up with the material.  I was asked today if we are going to review all the stuff we learned in the semester.   There was a disconnect in viewing the current learning objectives as progressions of previous lab activities.  I see this in light of the Technology Exploration day we had this last weekend.  We showcased our ability to teach skills that are needed to get a job.  We demonstrated our ability to teach skills that are useful to employers.  We did not promote our willingness to repeat previous learning activities until the student has mastered the material, but that is what we sometimes need to do.  Reviewing basic tasks are not typically part of the normal job after the initial training program.  Most employers are likely to grow weary after telling the employee how to do the basic tasks twice a week for 12 consecutive weeks, but we do not.  There is a need to promote the lab activities as a progression of knowledge gained during previous lab sessions.   We are challenged to create a learning environment where the labs are not seen as independent learning activities.  When we treat the education like a job, where the employee is fired when the boss determines there have been enough chances to get it right, then we lose the student forever.  Some say they just do not “get it”, but they keep coming back into the classroom, and we keep making the effort to teach them the basic skills.  Keep coming back.  We have lots more circuits to cook, and lots of time left in the semester.  The semester review will be the hindsight into what we knew when we started the semester, and what we understand now.
