Using a text message to communicate with students is an easy, effective way to reach most of the students in your course.

  • 99% of students own a cell phone with texting

Successful Model

Using the tool, Remind 101 (now Remind), instructors at Abilene Christian University have increase success rates using text messages to communicate with their classes.  The model used was to send 4 text messages to class each week.  Using Remind, the messages can be sent from your cell phone or created and sent using e-mail.  The four text messages per week used this format:

– One message with information on the class.  IE, a quiz date, due date, or reading reminder
– One message on a current event tied to the course material
– One fun message
– One message inviting the students to text the instructor back (establishing a feedback loop)

Teachers never see students’ phone numbers. Students never see theirs.  And it can be added to Moodle.

How it began: The AH-HA Moment

Remind began at Michigan State University when Brett became overwhelmed and unorganized with his semester workload. The “AH-HA” moment came when he received a text message. Knowing students text message and email so often, what if a program could send reminders to students before their assignments are due?
